On the 14th of April, the Y.A.P.S executive committee and Y.A.P.S members spent the day in Carletonville adding some colour to the dull beige walls of SAVF homeless shelter centre’s – a building that many struggling families call home.

Our road trip from Johannesburg started off rather entertaining as we exchanged Portuguese songs, jokes and Portuguese discussions via walkie-talkies between the two cars as we travelled in convey. Arriving into Carletonville, all the dedicated Y.A.P.S members travelling  from various destinations met up for a substantial breakfast at the local Wimpy to get our energy levels up and ready for the huge painting task we were to face.

On arriving at SAVF, we were fortunate and grateful to have been able to bring along bags of clothing and food items that we managed to collect from various donors. SAVF were over the moon with this contribution and so were we!

Each member brought along their own brush and other relevant painting tools, listened to the house father’s wishes as to how he envisioned their “new” home to look and got right into it. We painted from 8am to 5pm that afternoon, leaving SAVF with a face lift that turned out to be a reflection of the smiles, warmth and hospitality that we received from the SAVF residents.

Y.A.P.S was also fortunate to have been able to get a sponsor for the lunch that afternoon which was another memorable moment as we shared lunch together.

The morning started off with the idea of Y.A.P.S contributing through community service but left us reflecting on our own blessings and realising the positive impact we can make to other people’s lives and the communities around us by simply just taking out a few hours of our day to give back.

S.A.V.F absolutely loved the concept of Y.A.P.S and was touched by the youth willing to contribute this way.

Y.A.P.S would like to thank all the members that came through that morning, the generous donations and especially Plascon for donating the paint – without the paint, this day could not be possible. Please refer to the link below for the “Thank you “ from S.A.V.F.
