A brief history:
In 1902 Langlaagte Children’s Home is established by Reverend Abraham Kriel, with 7 orphans in one corrugated iron building. In 1908 Maria Kloppers Children’s Haven is established by Maria Kloppers to care for unwanted babies. In 1979 Emdeni Children’s Home is established by Reverend Jan Hofmeyr and the Uniting Reformed Church in Soweto, to address the street children problem. Since 1995, satellite homes are established in ordinary suburbs. The Johanna Malan Early Childhood Development Centre is taken over in 2003 to save it from closure. They are from different races and both sexes, but came from a background that has one thing in common, namely too little good and too much bad. Some are clever, healthy and pretty. Some have disabilities or are living with the sword of Aids over their heads. Some are just a few days old, others are already 18.
Abraham Kriel Childcare is one of South Africa’s oldest and most respected childcare organisations. With 106 years of experience in childcare, the organisation takes the lead in numerous new developments. Therapeutic services have long been standard practice. This has now been expanded fi rst by opening specialist houses for children with complex trauma and others with special needs and most recently with the opening of an “ Impact School” in an effort to ensure the healing and development of damaged children in an unthreatening environment. All these programmes can be presented in great detail should you be interested to know more.
The children we care for :
800 + children in need of care from all communities in Gauteng benefit from our services. They have been severely traumatized and often need specialist care. A significant proportion is difficult to place because of “complex” trauma, disability or illness. Abraham Kriel Childcare network with the Department of Social Development, the Children’s Court and numerous charity organizations
Our vision :
Why do they need us? It is our passion to ensure the optimal development of traumatized and other children in need of care
• Children are neglected and abandoned, go hungry, cold and uneducated. Worst of all, they are the sex toys of parents, family members and friends and most of the time they become a source of income.
• A culture of violence and child abuse prevails and children need protection and a place to heal.
• AIDS is killing parents and children need adult intervention to care, develop and nurture them to independence.
Our racial profile consists of 77% Black/Coloured children and 23 % White children.
Our mission:
From a Christian frame of reference, to care for committed children in our residential facilities and to develop, empower and reintegrate them and other socially disrupted and disadvantaged children and families to enable them to function independently and to contribute to society. Children blossom when they receive love, hugs and kisses. When they learn and play and when their hurt can be healed. Most children receive this at home. Others need a very special place and special people. We have a special place. Will you please be that special person?
