Dear YAPS

Fund-raising is definitely a challenge in our country, and we therefore appreciate any assistance anyone has to offer us. In an organisation such as ours, it is overwhelming to see the generosity and unselfishness of people. Lusito depends on the community and businesses for its survival, but with people such as you, we are sure to achieve our goals.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, Children and Staff of Lusito, we would like to thank you for assisting us in selling of tickets at Lusito Land 2012 – it was a tremendous help for the YAPS group that assisted us and we are very grateful for your assistance – THANK YOU!

It is through the continuous support and humble relationship we have with our supporters, which ensures that Lusito continues to provide the best possible care for these special children.

Thank you once again,

Yours in Charity,

Suzy de Lima

YAPS Adds Colour

On the 14th of April, the Y.A.P.S executive committee and Y.A.P.S members spent the day in Carletonville adding some colour to the dull beige walls of SAVF homeless shelter centre’s – a building that many struggling families call home.

Our road trip from Johannesburg started off rather entertaining as we exchanged Portuguese songs, jokes and Portuguese discussions via walkie-talkies between the two cars as we travelled in convey. Arriving into Carletonville, all the dedicated Y.A.P.S members travelling  from various destinations met up for a substantial breakfast at the local Wimpy to get our energy levels up and ready for the huge painting task we were to face.

On arriving at SAVF, we were fortunate and grateful to have been able to bring along bags of clothing and food items that we managed to collect from various donors. SAVF were over the moon with this contribution and so were we!

Each member brought along their own brush and other relevant painting tools, listened to the house father’s wishes as to how he envisioned their “new” home to look and got right into it. We painted from 8am to 5pm that afternoon, leaving SAVF with a face lift that turned out to be a reflection of the smiles, warmth and hospitality that we received from the SAVF residents.

Y.A.P.S was also fortunate to have been able to get a sponsor for the lunch that afternoon which was another memorable moment as we shared lunch together.

The morning started off with the idea of Y.A.P.S contributing through community service but left us reflecting on our own blessings and realising the positive impact we can make to other people’s lives and the communities around us by simply just taking out a few hours of our day to give back.

S.A.V.F absolutely loved the concept of Y.A.P.S and was touched by the youth willing to contribute this way.

Y.A.P.S would like to thank all the members that came through that morning, the generous donations and especially Plascon for donating the paint – without the paint, this day could not be possible. Please refer to the link below for the “Thank you “ from S.A.V.F.

2011 was an awesome year for Y.A.P.S! Amazing, unforgettable memories were created with our special members and we looking forward to a BIGGER and better year ahead!! 2012 is going to memorable! This year we have decided to approach things a little differently by reaching out to our existing members and the rest of the youth ( especially those who still want to join and be apart of Y.A.P.S) and dedicating our first meeting to you guys!!

Basically we would like to hear from you!! Y.A.P.S' vision this year is - more unity by having more Portuguese youth joining Y.A.P.S to help strengthen the unity of the Portuguse youth in South Africa. In order to have a successful society we need to join forces to ensure that our cultural passion and traditions will continue to be passed down to generations to come and will only be able achieve this with your help!

Join the Y.A.P.S executives on the 31st of January to come and voice your opinions, ideas and suggestions so we are able to grow and be a society that the Portuguse youth would want to be apart of and enjoy upcoming events which will be suggested by you! Y.A.P.S is meeting up with the Portuguese consulate on the 25th of January and we would love to give you feedback on what was discussed.

Signing up of members and our favored shirts will be on sale at this meeting which will be convenient for those who have always wanted to sign up and receive an official Y.A.P.S membership card. If you are interested, please accept the invite on facebook and send a message letting us know how many will be attending from your side for catering purposes. Looking forward to seeing you there so that we can make a difference and be a Portuguese society that you have always wanted to be apart of!

Y.A.P.S Charity Soccer Tournament III
Written by Miguel Da Paixao
Wednesday, 26 October 2011 12:05

On the 26th of November 2011 our annual YAPS indoor soccer tournament took place. 15 teams arrived at the Randburg Soccer 5’s indoor soccer fields looking forward to a day of good spirited, competitive football all in the name of having fun and helping out SAVF and Abraham Kriel (the charities that were selected to be the primary beneficiaries from the 2011 tournament).

The teams were split into 2 groups and the games began, with The Pedros hard at play to defend their title (winners of the 2010 YAPS Charity Soccer Tournament).

Lunch time arrived with a visit from the Abraham Kriel children.  YAPS goal was to ensure that the children had fun, so a soccer game was organised for them where some of our YAPS members took part.  The children were then given lunch compliments of YAPS, as well as a cap and water bottle compliments of CIB.

Then crunch time came and the 2 top teams from each group were decided to battle it out in the semi-finals. The Pedros & Boca Juniors from Group A and FC Prowlers & All Stars from Group B.

FC Prowlers and The Pedros made it into the final and had to battle it out for the R4,000 winners cheque.  It was a close game with the final score being 1 – 0 to FC prowlers who had managed to beat the defending champs.

FC Prowlers picked up their gold medals and the R4,000 prize money. The Pedros walked away with their R2,000 runners-up cheque along with their silver medals.  While Boca Juniors walked away with R1000 as holders of third place and their bronze medals. What an awesome day it was with R3000 being donated to SAVF and Abraham Kriel.

We look forward to next year’s tournament and the next YAPS event in order to get as many Portuguese in our large Gauteng Portuguese community together in an effort to enrich our culture, make friends and of course to help those that are less fortunate than us. After all, that is what YAPS is all about.

Thanks to all our sponsors as well as all those who came out to support us. We hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Kind Regards

YAPS committee
